by senators john mccain, kelly ayotte and lindsey graham close to target the president's staff, specifically the potential nomination of ambassador susan rice as secretary of state. >> we will do whatever's necessary to block the nomination that's within our power as far as susan rice is concerned. >> you don't end up on every single major sunday show without affirmatively putting yourself out there of wanting to carry forward a message on behalf of the administration. >> i don't trust her. the reason i don't trust her is because i think she knew better and if she didn't know better she shouldn't be the voice of america. >> president obama is far from conceding defeat. channeling his own inner mama grizzly. he bears his teeth. >> i'm the president. and i'm always responsible. the suggestion that anybody in my team, whether secretary of state, or u.n. ambassador, anybody on my team, would play politics or mislead when we've lost four of our own, governor, is offensive. >> yesterday, the claws were out. >> if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should g

you go from getting 44% of the hispanic vote to 31% at john mccain in got to 27% that mitt romney got, that is a bad situation for republicans. when you have the group of growing faster than any other group as part of the electorate and you are shrinking in your share of the vote, that is a big problem. this is one republicans are going to have to deal with. the other groups -- obama did not do well among the white women. the number is a little distorted because so many are hispanic women. an african-american woman that may be voting for the democrats for other reasons. host: exit polls show that female voters went 55% to 45%. guest: we have a gender gap a denture every election except for 2010. and republicans came out even. in presidential elections they have not done well. 11 points is a lot. we will have to think about doing better. i think you do better when you have better candidates. host: talk about the third part of the editorial, the young voters. guest: when they get older, they become more conservative. i do not mean to be dismissive about that. one of the surprises about

john mccain as secretary of state. martha: what you think about that? >> i like john mccain very much. i think john kerry would be a choice before john mccain. but it would probably be a good idea to reach across the aisle. but you are trying to litigate the election. saying that obama did nothing but obamacare, which is not true. let's move forward and realize. unfortunately -- [talking over each other] [talking over each other] >> we have a debt ambassador in libya. [talking over each other] >> is that susan rice's fault? we need to get to the bottom of this. >> you are arguing what we argued a month ago. martha: regardless of what we see here today, there is testimony being given right now. it is honestly a hot issue and remains so. we know that we will hear from general david petraeus in the coming days. there is more to be told and we will get to the bottom of it. we will see whether susan rice continues to stand by as we move forward in the process. bill: 12 minutes away, we have jon scott and jenna lee on "happening now." martha: and we are awaiting a news conference on the att

. senators like john mccain and others on the right wing have been trying to have a scandal with the tax against the president's ambassador to the u.n. susan rice. today, the president called and he said, i have had enough. >> let me say specifically about susan rice she's done exemplary work. she represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. as i have said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. i'm happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence she had received and to besmirch her reputation is outrageous. i don't think there is any debate in this country when you have four americans killed, that's a problem. we've got to get to the bottom of it. there needs to b

secretary of state. republican senators john mccain and lindsey graham have called rice unthus worthy and unqualified for a promotion for her comments that an anti-muslim video triggered the benghazi attack that skilled four americans. president obama insisted the ambassador was simply making a presentation based on the available intelligence and had tough words for the senators. when they go after the u.n. ambassador apparently because they think she's an easy target, then they've got a problem with me. and should i choose, if i think that she would be the best person to serve america in the capacity at the state department department, then i will nominate here. >> eliot: much more on that a little later in the program. the president also reached out to the g.o.p. on immigration reform and offered an idea that he would like to see from congress. >> obama: whatever process we have needs to make sure that border security's strong, needs to deal with employers effectively, needs to provide a pathway for the undocumented here needs to deal with the dream act kids and i think that's some

to talk about how they can work together. the republicans say look he did the same thing with john mccain as president elect in 2008. both parties went to their separate corners in the end and didn't get a lot done together. republic strategists are saying if the president is serious about this second term maybe they can get business done. take a listen. >> i was interested in his remarks last night saying the best is yet to come. we would have liked to have seen some of that in the first four years. maybe is he serious this time. >> in an effort to try to show he is following up, we're told by white house aides that late in the evening last night into the early hours of this morning the president started dialing up john boehner, the house speaker on the republic side. harry reid the democrat. leaders in both parties to try to say look, let's get this conversation started, shep. >> shepard: ed, the campaign seemed very confident in this outcome is it saying anything about what might have surprised the campaign. >> what they are saying is they couldn't believe the margin of victory in colo

namely john mccain and lindsey graham for the criticism leveled at susan rice. the u.n. secretary, shortly after the attacks that resulted in the death of four americans, she went on "meet the press" and other sunday shows and said what happened in benghazi was the result of a spontaneous protest that morphed in to something else and resulted in the death of those americans. republicans attacking ever since. but now, as susan rice's name floated as a successor to hillary clinton as secretary of state, mccain and graham taken out after susan rice. that, no question about it, it came from the heart and raised the ire of president obama. here's what he had to say. >> if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody they should go after me. and i'm happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador, who had nothing to do with benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence she had received and to -- to besmirch her reputation is outrageous. when they go after the u.n. ambassador, apparently because they th

've had president bush and john mccain and others who have supported comprehensive immigration reform in the past. we need to seize the moment. my expectation is that we get a bill introduced and we begin the possess in congress very soon after my inauguration. some conversations i think are already beginning to take place among senators and congressmen and my staff about what would this look like? and when i say comprehensive immigration reform is very similar to the outlined of previous efforts of immigration reform. i think it should include a continuation of the strong border security measures we've take . we have to secure our borders. i think it should contain serious penalties for companies that are purposely hiring undocumented workers and taking advantage of them. and i do think that there should be a pathway for legal status for those who are living in this country, are not engaged in criminal activity, are here simply to work, it's important for them to pay back taxes, it's important for them to learn english, it's porn for them to potentially pay a fine but to give them th

sharply criticized by john mccain and lindsey crime graham who said if she's nominated as secretary of state it's not going to fly. boy, obama came all but saying just bring it on because i'm going to defend her. >> that was absolutely fierce defense. that part press conference really sort of blew me back there, listening to that defense. but i also dide lndse graham and john mccain talking earlier today, and they were just as fierce on the other side. and one thing president obama kept saying is that this basically-- her coming out and saying who she did in the early days wasn't her fault because she was not responsible for benghazi. but that's basically what john mccain and lindsey graham are saying. that she wasn't responsible for benghazi, so why did the white house put her out there? and they're saying only for political rains. and they criticize ambassador rice forot asking more questions. she got a briefing. she got a briefing on the latest intelligence, says the white house. the white house says they're the ones that put her out there. so if what she said turns out not to be
